Silhouette Portrait of a Man

Date

ca. 1890

Description

This photograph is from the studio of Irving Saunders, located in Alfred Centre and Friendship, New York. Saunders operated his studios beginning in the 1860s into the 1890s.

The young man in the photograph is wearing a white tie, stand up collar with a stiff, bib front white shirt, and a black vest, so it can be assumed that his coat is either a black wool tailcoat or a morning coat. The photograph may have been taken for a special occasion; on the back someone has written "A.U. '90, Burdette B. Brown."

An emphasis was placed on being neat and "suitable" in appearance during this time. Men were expected to be well groomed, with a short hair style and lack of facial hair.
