Description

The URI Historic Textile and Costume Collection houses several hundred photographs ranging from the early daguerreotypes of the 1840s to paper photographs of the 1940s. The collection depicts both the history of photography and changing fashions.

The primary motivation for collecting photographs is to illustrate the fashions worn by ordinary Americans. A secondary motivation is to demonstrate how the invention of the photographic process in 1839 provided a new source for the study of historic fashion.
