A Young Boy

ca. 1905-1915

Description

The boy seen here looks to be about 10 to 12 years old, and dressed in a daytime outfit. The "double-breasted belt coat with matching knickerbocker pants and golf cap" was a popular outfit advertised in the 1908 Sears, Roebuck Catalogue for boys sizes 8 to 15 years, with a cost of $1.25. Although this young man wears a cap made from a striped or corduroy fabric, its style is similar to the golf cap popularized in 1907.

Underneath his jacket, the shirt collar is rounded and adorned with a tie. The tied knot is in style. To complete his outfit, the boy is wearing a simple lace-up pair of ankle-high shoes. Tie shoes became popular in the 1910s as a new style, completing this stylish young man's look.
