Description

This photograph shows a young boy, most likely age four or five, wearing a white Russian suit. The Russian suit features a tunic that ends just above the knee, with a flat collar like that of a sailor suit, long sleeves and a leather belt. The knee-length breeches top a pair of dark stockings and side-button ankle boots.

Russian suits were popularized after 1905, when President Theodore Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace prize for his role in mediating the Russo-Japanese war. Inspired by Russian folk dress, the outfit was offered by mail-order catalogs and available as a pattern for home sewing. It fell out of favor around 1920, after the 1917 Russian Revolution and the end of WWI.
