Two Young Boys

Description
This photograph of two boys, holding hands, was taken in the studio of Daniel Sewell in Sonora, CA. The boys wear almost identical outfits featuring a style known as the "zouave" jacket. The jacket buttons at the top, revealing the white shirt with a small rounded collar, tucked into the wide band of the long trousers made from a matching fabric. The outfit was popular in the 1860s, getting its name from the uniform worn by the French Algerian soldiers (Blanco, et al. 2016). This is one of many fashions inspired by military wear. The zouave jacket was also a popular style in women's fashions during this time.
William Herman Rulofson was a very influential photographer during the mid 1800s. In 1850 he moved to Sonora, CA and opened his studio, leasing it to Daniel Sewell in 1863 and continuing in a different location until his death in 1878. (Palmquist & Kailbourn, 2000)
The two boys wear their hair combed into in a stiff wave at the top of the head. This fashion, worn by men and boys alike, was fading away in the 1860s. This, combined with the date at which Daniel Sewell leased the Sonora studio, suggests that the photograph was taken in 1863 or 1864.
