Description
Bride, 1890s
The bride, identifiable by her white wedding dress and veil, depicts several features of 1890s fashion. Her waist is very small indicating that she is wearing a tight corset underneath her gown. The gathered bodice narrows to a point at the waist, and it has large “leg-of-mutton” sleeves topped by a wide double-ruffle collar. The bustle had disappeared at the end of the 1880s, replaced by a train. One white shoe, embellished with a bow, is visible. At this time bridal veils were full length and supported by floral headpieces. She wears gloves and holds a sprig of flowers tied with a bow.
