Title
Photograph of "Augusta Dinsmore" ca. 1870
Date
ca. 1868-1872
Description
The sitter wears a full skirt with a small bustle effect, helping to date this photograph to the end of the 1860s or the beginning of the 1870s. The high neckline with its separate collar and brooch had been in use since the 1850s, but the fullness of the skirt had begun shifting to the back by 1868. Additionally, the front of the skirt features an apron effect visible near the paisley shawl draped over the chair. Draped apron effects came into fashion at the same time as the early form of the bustle. She wears a lace shawl with a hood. Her hair appears to be contained in a net or snood in back, and is decorated with a string of beads.
