Description

Fashionable Spring Walking Dresses

Fashion plates are “tiny yet mighty” in how they offer a glimpse into past fashion. La Belle Assemblée was one of the premier publications for London society women that ran from 1806 to 1832. This fashion plate from La Belle Assemblée June 1808 shows three women in walking dresses. Each lady is wearing a white empire-waist dress in a tubular silhouette. The woman in the center has a high neckline and double sleeves that are trimmed in lace and tied with gold ribbons. The woman on the left side is wearing a spencer, while the one on the right is wearing a “Spanish vest” (Hern). The hats and bonnets shown include a turban, “gipsy” hat, and a poke bonnet. All of the women are wearing gloves, and two are carrying parasols. The fashion plate exemplifies the neoclassical look that was at the height of fashion in 1808. Spencers and the color yellow continued to be popular into the 1810s.
