Description

[left] A Full Dress, the Boxborough Jacket; Engraven by favor of Her Grace from the Original.

[right] A New Spencer Walking Dress with the Incognito Hat, as worn by Miss Duncan in the New Opera.

This fashion plate was engraved exclusively for John Bell’s La Belle Assemblée based on styles worn by fashionable society women in London. The evening dress on the left features a “Roxborough jacket” over a high-waisted gown with short puffed sleeves. It was based on an ensemble worn by the Duchess of Roxborough and drawn with her permission (Sanborn 2010). The hem of the white dress is embroidered. The outfit on the right is based on a walking dress worn by a Miss Duncan at the New Opera. A blue spencer jacket is worn over a white dress. The “Incognita Hat” mimics a man’s bi-corn hat.
