Photograph of a Fashionable Young Lady

Date

ca. 1900

Description

This photograph was taken in the Westerly, RI studio of the Scholfield Brothers. The young woman’s dress exhibits many of the features that characterize fashion at this time: high stand-up collar, the beginning of the monobosom, slightly puffed sleeves, a narrow waist, and horizontal ruffles at the hem of her trumpet-shaped skirt. Her shoes have a Louis heel with a high tongue and almond point. Her hair is held in a bun, and she wears wire-rimmed glasses.
