Title
Portrait of a Young Lady
Date
ca. 1875
Description
This young lady, in her plaid dress with striped stockings, high-button shoes, and eyelet collar and cuffs, is fashionably dressed for the 1870s. Her dress, probably made from wool or silk fabric, has an inset waistband decorated with a bow at the center. The pleated skirt falls below the knee. The wide collar decorated with eyelet embroidery and the matching cuffs could be removed for regular cleaning.
She wears her hair drawn back and secured with a hairband with a few curls on her forehead. This style suggests a date after 1876.
Queen Victoria popularized the use of plaid after the purchase of Balmoral in 1852. Rooms in the castle were decorated in plaid and the royal family began wearing traditional kilts while staying in Scotland.
