Portrait of a Seated Boy

Date

ca. 1870

Description

The young boy seated on a pillow in this photograph is dressed in a tunic that buttons down his right side, with the Eton-style collar and cuffs of his shirt showing from beneath the garment. The wide leather belt combined with this side closure suggests an influence of Russian or Eastern European folk dress. We assume he is wearing short trousers which may be just visible on his left leg. The horizontal-striped stockings were very popular during the middle of the 19th century for boys and girls alike.

Girls and boys often had short hair and can be distinguished in photographs by the placement of the part. Girls often had their hair parted in the center, while little boys' hair was parted on the side.
