Description

This waistcoat was made from a black satin fabric, with a brown glazed cotton back and off-white cotton front lining. The front chest areas are padded. The double-breasted front has three pairs of buttons and a low shawl collar. Towards the end of the 19th century, the back collar on men's waistcoats measured only an inch or so high. There are three welt pockets, one at each hip and one on the proper left breast.

Worn areas on the front show that the wefts are a brown cotton with warps of black silk. The waistcoat is partially machine sewn.

Black was a popular color for vests throughout the 19h century. From 1860 to 1900, factory production of men's clothing sped up making it possible for more men to dress in current styles.
