Woman's Bonnet

Date

ca. 1850s

Description

This bonnet is made from a dark red silk velvet with rose-colored, striped silk ribbon ties. It is trimmed with silk brocade ribbons, of a black ground with copper-colored designs, that are folded and pleated across the crown. The inside of the brim is decorated with small sprigs of fabric flowers, loops of pink silk ribbons, and black net. The back features a curtain known as a bavolet, here a short section of gathered dark red silk velvet that would protect the back of the wearer's neck.

The bonnet's shape is meant to frame the face. The inside of the brim could be decorated with trims suitable to the age of the wearer, in this case possibly a young oman. The use of dark velvet suggests this was worn during colder months.
