Men's Clothing, early 19th century

Date

early 19th century

Description

These items belonged to ancestors of Franklin Cushman. They reflect the variety of fabrics available at the time, from common cotton checks to finely-woven silk fabrics imported from Europe.

The tailcoat represents the earliest garment, worn as everyday attire in 1800, whereas they became evening wear as the century progressed.

The waistcoat, or vest, was essential to the nineteenth-century male wardrobe. It allowed for the most variation in fabric choices and could be quite colorful.

Around 1815 the male wardrobe made the transition from knee-length breeches to ankle length trousers such as the green-checked pair seen here.

The coat does not have a waist seam and is an early sack coat, which came to dominate men's daytime attire by the end of the century.
