These men are dressed appropriately for Longchamps, which was part of a park in the forested area of Bois de Boulogne in 1842. When Napoleon III became emperor of France, the Bois de Boulogne was reconfigured and opened as a public park, complete with a fashionable racecourse that first held horse races in 1857. Reporters regularly wrote about the fashions men and women wore to the horse races at the Hippodrome de Longchamp.
