Description

Petit Courrier des Dames, August 31, 1836

French magazines sometimes included menswear fashions. Depicted here are two gentlemen in the latest Parisian styles. The gentleman on the left illustrates a “Habit de Ville,” or “City Suit,” consisting of a tailcoat, waistcoat, pantaloons, ruffled shirt, and black cravat.  The figure on the right displays what the French termed a “redingote.” Interestingly, the description attributed the new cut of the redingote to a tailor named Mr. Herbelet. During the nineteenth century, fashion innovations in menswear often began with tailors.
