Description

Latest Fashions, July 1841, for Graham’s Magazine

The woman on the left illustrates the latest in evening dresses. By 1840 all vestiges of the exaggerated sleeves of the 1830s are gone. Attention is shifting to a very narrow waist, accentuated by a V shape. Bodices begin to be boned (stiffened with stays at seamlines and darts). The man nearest her is in riding attire, evidenced by the riding crop and the horse behind him. The couple on the right are attired in outfits suitable for the outdoors. She wears a figured shawl which foreshadows the large paisley shawls of the 1850s and 1860s. The man on the right is dressed in frock coat, pantaloons, and black cravat signifying a daytime event. White cravats meant eveningwear. He carries a top hat and a walking stick.
