Une Conversation La Mode
The conversation, ostensibly about the open book in the woman’s hand, is taking place outdoors. Thus, the fashions represent ensembles suitable for walking outside or visiting friends and relatives. The woman wears a patterned dress, possibly made of printed cotton, with the large sleeves that were just coming into fashion in 1832. Her wrap is a fringed shawl. She sports fingerless gloves, a bow decorating her topknot, earrings, necklace, and tied shoes. The man wears a black frock coat with a patterned waistcoat, pantaloons. His accessories include a pocket watch, gloves, plaid cravat, and square-toed boots or shoes.
