Description
In the nineteenth century, men wore vests under a coat or jacket, be it a tailcoat, frock coat, morning coat, or sack coat. Worn over a shirt, the garment was a staple for all men no matter the occasion or occupation.
This vest is made from a natural-colored linen with a cotton back and cotton lining. The linen front fabric has a woven horizontal design with stripes of alternating twill patterns similar to a herringbone. The single breasted front closes very high with six fabric-covered buttons, probably wood, and a high standup collar at the back.
There is a single welt pocket on each side front. Two pairs of twill tape tie in the back to adjust the size of the waistcoat. It is completely hand sewn.
