Title

Daguerreotype of Seated Woman with Bonnet

Date

ca. 1850 - 1860

Description

The daguerreotype is set in a leather case with a red velvet embossed interior, framed with a gold matte embossed with the word ‘Stratford’ in the upper left and lower right corners. These likely refer to the photographer Henry K. Stratford, who photographed in Massachusetts in 1851-1852 and embossed his last name on matte frames.

The young woman is sitting for her photograph in a white bonnet and a dark colored shawl. Her hair is tucked back into her bonnet, which is round and ties under the chin with a wide ribbon. A light colored skirt peaks out from under a shawl with decorative trim. She wears dangling earrings, a ring on the middle finger of her right hand and a ring on the ring finger of her left hand, indicating she was married. The bonnet shape, possible photographer, and type of photograph suggest the daguerreotype is from the early 1850s.
