Title

Daguerreotype of Woman seated with her elbow on a table

Date

ca. 1845 - 1850

Description

This daguerreotype of a young woman resides in a case made of leather-covered wood. A small clasp opens and closes the case. When the case is opened up, two distinct parts are revealed. The left-hand side has a worn red velvet embossed with a leaf pattern. The right-hand side has the photograph set into a gold-colored matte. Both the case and the matte are well worn.

The woman wears a pelerine, matching cuffs, and a long chain and locket. Lockets were very fashionable in the 19th century. Her hair is neatly parted in the middle and her cheeks have been hand-colored red. Her dark-colored day dress features fitted sleeves with lace edgings. The simplicity of the dress is typical of the 1850s fashion.
