Description
This fashion plate is labeled “London Dresses for October. Published by Vernor Hood and Sharpe, Oct. 1, 1808.” During this period high-waisted Empire dresses were popular. The waistline ends just below the bust and the trim at the hem is becoming more decorative than those seen earlier in the decade. The two women on the left display evening ensembles that expose their necks and upper backs. Long gloves can be seen on one of the figures. Both wear something on their heads, specifically a toque on the left and a plumed band in the center. The woman on the right shows daytime dress which is more covered up. She accessorizes with a shawl, possibly Kashmir, as well as a brimmed bonnet.
