Description

This photograph of Franklin R. Cushman (1870-1952) was taken at a studio located in the Shepard & Company department store, originally at the corner of Clemence and Westminster Streets in Providence, Rhode Island.

The store opened in April of 1880 and within the next twenty-five years grew to become the largest of its kind in New England. According to the nomination form for the National Register of Historic Places, prepared by Robert T. Gifford in April 1976, " It was John Shepard's desire to have for sale under the one roof practically all the necessaries of life, as well as the luxuries.'"
